Can you reuse someone else’s YouTube thumbnail?

Updated October 2026

A thumbnail is usually copyrighted by the creator, or by whoever made the image. Saving one for personal reference or research is common, but publishing it elsewhere may need permission.

Commentary, news reporting and education are sometimes treated differently depending on your country, and this is not legal advice. When in doubt, ask the creator or make your own image.
